EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RAYNAUD'S DISEASE

1/ WHAT IS RAYNAUD'S DISEASE?

Raynaud's disease is a chronic disorder of blood circulation in the body's extremities – essentially the feet and hands – which occurs when the body is exposed to cold, damp or (more rarely) stress.

It is named after Maurice Raynaud who first identified the phenomenon, in 1862.

In the vast majority of cases (around 90%), Raynaud's phenomenon is considered to be idiopathic, i.e. due to an unknown cause. This form, characterised by the presence of symptoms that are bothersome but not serious, is known as Raynaud's disease. Its rarer but more serious form – when the phenomenon appears as a consequence of another autoimmune condition – is called Raynaud's syndrome.

2/ WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF RAYNAUD'S DISEASE AND SYNDROME

Raynaud's disease and syndrome have very characteristic symptoms: your hands suddenly become frozen, white and numb when they suffer from the cold. This can take minutes or hours. The pain is also very sharp, particularly when the blood starts to circulate again and irrigate your fingers. This extremely unpleasant phenomenon, which we've all experienced, is called vibration white finger. And our heated gloves are designed to protect you from it forever.

3/ WHAT EXACTLY ARE RAYNAUD'S DISEASE AND SYNDROME?

People are homeothermic. This means that their body temperature must remain stable at around 37°C. However, the extremities are considered to be "critical zones" because when exposed to the cold, the body starts up a natural self-protection mechanism: prioritising the torso and vital organs, even if it means leaving the feet and hands out. This reduces the speed of blood flow. In practical terms, your blood doesn't circulate as well, so you don't get as much heat.

On top of this, once exposed to the cold, the body will voluntarily reduce heat loss by constricting the small arteries under the skin: this is known as vasoconstriction. Raynaud's disease is an over-reaction to this vasoconstriction phenomenon. This means that the nerves that control the constriction of these hypersensitive arteries will react disproportionately and trigger a sudden reduction in the calibre of these arteries in the form of spasms. This sudden stop in blood circulation is responsible for the various symptoms specific to Raynaud's disease.

"Raynaud's disease is an over-reaction to this vasoconstriction phenomenon."

4/ CAN RAYNAUD'S DISEASE BE TREATED? WHAT SOLUTIONS ARE THERE?

No, there is no real cure for Raynaud's disease or syndrome. However, it is possible to find solutions that reduce this phenomenon, especially by protecting your hands from exposure to the cold.

With this in mind, we've developed our range of heating gloves. Because we know what this pain is like. We know how something you love can turn into a horrible experience and how a great day can become a nightmare. We've made it our mission that enjoying your sport –from skiing to cycling, hiking, trekking or running – is never again spoilt by your cold hands. The heated gloves you can see below are the result of years of work.
