Equip yourself like the freeride skiing champions

Marcus Goguen, Léo Slemett, Manon Loschi, Max Hitzig... What do all these champions have in common? Their equipment! To achieve their feats, the world's best riders wear our heated gloves, our ultra-technical socks, our neck warmers and our thermal base layers. Working closely with these athletes who push their limits has inspired us to question the boundaries of what is possible and develop cutting-edge equipment that combines comfort and performance. Innovative equipment that keeps you warm and dry in powder snow in all conditions, even when they become extreme!

How do our freeride skiing champions equip themselves? Gloves, socks, base layers: what equipment should you choose to avoid cold hands and feet when skiing off-piste? Are heated solutions suitable for powder skiing? Find all the answers to your questions in this buying guide and advice!

"To achieve their feats, the best riders on the planet wear our heated gloves, our ultra-technical socks, our neck warmers and our thermal base layers. "

THE ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT LIST FOR FREERIDE SKIING

Steep and remote mountains, challenging (not to say exposed) environments, deep snow, changeable weather, and even extreme cold: freeride skiing is an extreme sport that sometimes, often, puts the body to the test.

If we were to make an exhaustive list of the essential equipment you need to carve turns in the powder, you would need:

HOW CAN YOU STAY WARM OFF-PISTE ALL DAY LONG?

This is the question we were asked by Marcus Goguen, Léo Slemett and Manon Loschi (and the challenge we took up): what is the ideal combination of equipment to stay warm and dry, in a context where your hands, feet and, more generally, your body are constantly exposed to the cold, exertion and humidity?

Drawing on our long-standing expertise in body thermoregulation and the dozens of mountaineering exploits we have supported, we have established several Therm-ic golden rules:

  1. Optimise the famous ‘three-layer system’ by choosing a high-performance base layer. In other words, don't compromise on your base layer!
  2. Choose targeted and effective protection for your extremities! Don't compromise on the thermal comfort of your hands, feet and neck, as these are the most exposed parts of your body and therefore the first to suffer from the cold.
  3. Opt for smart heating technologies and solutions, whose intensity can be adjusted according to the conditions.

By following these simple principles, our athletes are able to stabilise their thermal comfort. They maintain a constant temperature: they don't freeze when they are static, waiting, nor do they overheat when they start moving, during the ascent.

‘Our athletes are able to stabilise their thermal comfort. They maintain a constant temperature.’

WHICH GLOVES ARE BEST SUITED TO FREERIDE SKIING?

Our professional riders all agree that the Freeride Ultra Heat heated gloves are a huge favourite. Why? Because they provide a simple solution to a complex need: keeping their hands warm and dry in sometimes extreme and often changing conditions, between periods of action and periods of waiting.

The Freeride Ultra Heat heated gloves are little gems in terms of craftsmanship and innovation. They offer:

  • 3 heat settings to adjust the intensity of the heat according to the effort and the surrounding cold.
  • A 6-hour battery life to accompany you through a long day punctuated by short climbs during which your hands warm up and long descents during which they cool down.
  • Unbeatable durability thanks to their goatskin leather construction and Kevlar reinforcements.
  • A membrane that is both waterproof and breathable. This keeps you warm without making you sweat, because moisture is the worst enemy of comfort.
  • Exceptional agility and dexterity, thanks to a pre-shaped construction with no excess material on the palm. This allows you to maintain great precision in your movements when technical handling is required.

It therefore meets all the specifications set by the legends of this sport: safety first, enjoyment second, and performance optimisation last.

In addition to the Freeride Ultra Heat heated gloves, we have also taken advantage of our partnership with the Freeride World Tour to develop the Therm-ic Freeride Extra Warm FWT Edition gloves and the Therm-ic Extra Warm FWT Edition mittens. Technical, breathable, reliable and durable: we have undoubtedly designed the best insulated gloves for freeride skiing! What makes us say that? The fact that they are worn and approved by the world's best athletes!

‘Stay warm without sweating, because moisture is the worst enemy of comfort.’

WHICH SOCKS TO CHOOSE FOR SKIING IN POWDER SNOW?

This is a question that is often overlooked – because socks are something you can't see – but it's actually crucial for enjoying and performing at your best when skiing off-piste.

There are two options, depending on the intensity:

1/ Ultra-technical, compression freeride ski socks. In particular, the range of compression socks from Dissent.

These are our athletes' favourite for competitions and performance-focused days, as they promote blood circulation while offering an exceptional fit. The advantages? Maximum precision and stability combined with minimal muscle fatigue, transforming a few nice turns in the powder into a historic run synonymous with victory on the Freeride World Tour!

2/ Heated socks, particularly the range featuring S.E.T® technology. A game-changing innovation that provides even heat distribution by replacing the usual heating points with a thin 2mm line discreetly integrated into your clothing.

Marcus Goguen and his teammates therefore opt for Ultra Warm Comfort S.E.T® heated socks or Ultra Warm Performance S.E.T® heated socks for their ‘adventures’ or certain projects. These projects are known to involve spending a lot of time outdoors, in the mountains, in the extreme cold.

‘These freeride ski socks are our athletes' favourite for competitions and days dedicated to performance.’

WHICH BASELAYER IS MOST EFFECTIVE FOR OFF-PISTE SKIING?

To stay warm in the mountains – regardless of the sport or conditions – there is one golden rule: the ‘three-layer’ system.

The first layer keeps you warm but wicks away perspiration: this is the breathable layer.

The second layer retains heat: this is known as the insulating layer.

Finally, the third layer protects you from the wind and rain: this is the waterproof layer.

At Therm-ic, we have worked with our athletes to design the most advanced base layer on the market: the Ultra Warm Baselayer.

This heated base layer owes its success to three key words: comfort, technicality and lightness.

This ultra-innovative base layer is a distillation of technologies that provide unrivalled warmth and softness, as well as perfect sweat management.

Both breathable to wick away sweat on the climb and insulating to protect from the cold on the descent, the Ultra Warm Baselayer benefits from the same standard as our other heated solutions: S.E.T® technology for even heat distribution at 360°C; three heat settings to adjust the intensity; and record battery life.

The perfect compromise for creating a unique body microclimate while maintaining total freedom of movement. Discover the heated baselayer for women, with a specific cut for women, and for men.

When choosing your base layer, gloves and socks, don't forget your neck warmer. An essential piece of equipment that is as formidable for its protection as it is for its versatility!
